Jean-Michel Blais is a pianist-composer-performer based in Montreal.

Growing up in rural Quebec, Blais only started tickling on the family organ at age 9, before beginning to compose, then to attend piano lessons. He enjoyed playing in masses, weddings and funerals. Endowed with natural talent, he entered the Conservatoire de Musique de Trois-Rivières where he trained as a classical pianist. The constraints of it bothered him, as he began to gravitate around improvisation and experimentation. He therefore left the institution to travel, interrupting his musical journey.

Massy Ferguson & Paula Boggs Band

Massy Ferguson & Paula Boggs Band

Friday, June 2 @ 7:30PMFri, Jun 2 @ 7:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

For more than a dozen years, Massy Ferguson have proudly planted their boots on both sides of the country-rock divide, carving out their own brand of amplified Americana along the way. Based in Seattle, they've become international torchbearers of a sound that's distinctly American, with a touring history that spans nine different countries. On their fifth album, Great Divides, they double down on their rock & roll roots, mixing bar-band twang with raw, guitar-driven bang. Gluing those sounds together is the songwriting partnership of bass-playing frontman Ethan Anderson and guitarist Adam Monda, whose songs spin stories of small-town adolescence, big-city adulthood, and the long miles of highway that stretch between.

"Massy Ferguson proves that growing up doesn’t have to be the same as chilling out. Great Divides is just as full of energy as it is of wisdom. In these times, we need Massy Ferguson’s urgency." -- No Depression

For 15 years Paula Boggs Band has blended roots music and jazz to create "Seattle Brewed Soulgrass" for audiences across America and Canada. "Janus," released in 2022 is its 4th and latest studio album. "Rewriting the bluegrass story from a black perspective." AmericanaUK “Paula Boggs Band sets themselves apart distinctly by Boggs’ stunning vocals…this Seattle band sounds the part of a bygone era and part refreshingly modern, an exciting contributor to the Pacific Northwest’s diverse music scene.” Glide Magazine

James Coates ‘One Last Ride’ Album Release w/ The Oh Wells

Thursday, June 1 @ 7:30PMThu, Jun 1 @ 7:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

“James Coates sounds like Bob Dylan if he could actually sing, while lyrically he veers closer to Springsteen territory.” —Seattle Weekly

James Coates is a Northwest singer-songwriter who's used deeply-personal songs to connect with audiences for 15 years. His soulful brand of Americana blends rock, soul, country and R&B to create a sound that harkens back to the golden age of ‘60s and ‘70s songwriting.

The Oh Wells embody Northwest Americana highlighted with the band’s power pop and classic rock roots. Spinning up melody driven pop songs, relatable storytelling, and signature harmonies, The Oh Wells evoke a modern twist on classic American folk-rock from the 1960s and 70s. Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, singer-songwriters Brian Kerrigan and Ira Merrill formed The Oh Wells during the pandemic as they sent songs back and forth to each other over the internet. In 2021, the band released a Christmas EP with former Super Deluxe frontman, Braden Blake, entitled “Braden Blake and The Oh Wells – Satin Bows and Arrows”. In early 2022, The Oh Wells released their first EP of 7 original songs titled, “Dakota”, an acoustically driven EP that fuses their unique blend of originality with nods to artists they hold dear: Tom Petty, The Jayhawks, The Beatles and CSNY.

Tamikrest

Tamikrest

Wednesday, May 31 @ 7:30PMWed, May 31 @ 7:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

Tamikrest in tamasheq language means junction, connection, knot, coalition. The group members come from different horizons (Mali, Niger, Algeria and France). Wanting to assume fully their Touareg identity, they found in the rebel music Ishumar the means to express it. “A desert hosts us, a language unites us, a culture binds us.”

The story begins at Kidal, capital of the eighth Region of Mali, while making tea of course. Pino, Cheikh and Mossa had just finished a guitar workshop with Juhan Ecaré (guitarist for Meiway) when they decided to form a group with only two old ‘home made’ guitars. And they got to work… “Even though we are young, guitars still have six cords!”

After one year and a half of hard work, the group is complete and their repertory has grown to contain more than twenty-five original compositions. Though their music takes root in Ishumar Rock or Tuareg Blues, it borrows from various international influences as well as from neighbouring cultures.

Through the message of their songs, Tamikrest want to make Tamasheq poetry and culture accessible to inhabitants of a world larger than the immensity of the Saharian desert.

Sondre Lerche

Sondre Lerche

Tuesday, May 23 @ 7:30PMTue, May 23 @ 7:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

Written and recorded in an exhilarating creative whirlwind, Sondre Lerche’s remarkable new double album, Avatars of Love, is as ambitious as it is unexpected, defying the conventional wisdom of the streaming era with a series of sprawling, epic tracks that routinely stretch past the five, six, even ten-minute mark. What’s more, the record is perhaps the most revealing work of self-reflection Lerche’s ever dared to create, offering up a candid reckoning with loss, desire, and infatuation as it looks back on a lifetime of relationships (some more raw and recent than others). Captured with some of Lerche’s dearest friends back in his native Norway, the result is a beautiful and unabashedly romantic collection that walks the line between folk intimacy, electronic experimentalism, and orchestral grandeur, an open, honest exploration of sexuality and sentimentality that embraces the highs and lows of modern love in all its messy glory.

Born and raised in Bergen, Lerche first came to fame as a teenager with the release of his critically acclaimed debut, Faces Down, which Rolling Stone hailed as “one of the year’s loveliest, sunniest, poppiest albums.” Over the course of the ensuing two decades (most of which were spent living in the US), Lerche would go on to release eight more similarly celebrated studio albums, perform on Letterman, Conan, and at NPR’s Tiny Desk, score multiple feature films, and tour with the likes of Stereolab, Elvis Costello and St. Vincent, among others.
