The Long Winters is the musical creation of John Roderick, a Seattle-based musician, writer, and podcaster celebrated for his sharp wit and distinctive voice. The band has released three full-length albums on esteemed northwest indie Barsuk Records and toured extensively with Death Cab for Cutie, Nada Surf, The Decemberists, The Pernice Brothers, Keane, and others. Their beloved song “The Commander Thinks Aloud” was featured on the acclaimed podcast Song Exploder, profiled by Wired, and has appeared on numerous playlists and best-of lists, including WXPN’s Greatest Songs of the 21st Century (So Far). In celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Long Winters’ Putting the Days to Bed, the band will perform the album in its entirety at the early show of a New Year’s Eve doubleheader at The Triple Door. Released in 2006, Putting the Days to Bed features some of The Long Winters’ most enduring songs. Upon its release, NPR described The Long Winters as crafting “delightfully clever, shimmering pop” and called Roderick “a master storyteller,” while Uncut praised the album’s “lyrics that really grip” and SPIN called it “addictive listening.”
Beyond music, Roderick is a prolific writer and podcaster. He co-created The Omnibus Project with Ken Jennings, now in its ninth season, and co-hosts Roderick on the Line. His writing has appeared in Rolling Stone, Esquire, and Seattle Weekly, and he is the author of the short-prose collection Electric Aphorisms.
The Long Winters will return with a highly anticipated new album soon.
